ALBAWABA — Israeli police launched a large security operation after finding a timed bomb device in southern Tel Aviv that created significant disruption and raised fears of an impending attack.
Al Jazeera reports that the device, which was wrapped in an Israeli flag, was found in Rishon LeZion on Highway 431, south of Tel Aviv. Police quickly closed off the area and halted traffic to prevent public access while bomb disposal technicians arrived to eliminate the threat.
In addition to the explosives, authorities said they were dealing with additional firearms found at the location. According to Al Jazeera, Israeli media outlets had called the device a "timed bomb," casting doubt on its purpose and potential targets.
In response to the discovery, police sent out significant reinforcements and advised residents and vehicles to avoid the area. Images and videos that went viral online, many of which were aired by Al Jazeera, showed significant traffic jams and police cordons as emergency services worked to keep the area safe.
In light of the incident, which took place in the midst of high tensions in the neighborhood, police said investigations are ongoing to determine who placed the device and if there are any further security dangers.
