The Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Co. reached another milestone on Tuesday when its service was successfully activated in the UAE, said The Gulf News.
The Thuraya telecommunications service had a soft launch, said the paper, by testing the systems to ensure proper operation of the service before its formal launch on a commercial scale.
Test calls were made yesterday from Thuraya mobile phones.
"It worked very well, the voice at the other end was clear and audible," said a test caller yesterday. "The clarity is about the same as any other GSM phone, but the voice sounds a bit different when compared to other GSM phone calls," said another caller.
The service providers in other countries will gradually roll out services according to their own time-frames, said the paper.
Thuraya covers 99 countries, enabling more than one-third of the world's population to have access to modern telecommunications, whether they are in urban hubs or rural outposts.
Thuraya has concluded 40 service provider agreements and 100 roaming service agreements – Albawaba.com
