Three people were killed on Friday when a high speed German passenger train collided with a US army truck in this southern German town, police said.

At least five people were in critical condition and being treated in local hospitals. Some 20 people suffered slight injuries.

Police had originally said the dead included the driver of the truck, the train's conductor and two train passengers but later announced that the conductor had survived.

They said the death toll could still rise.

Police said the train was carrying 26 people and there were two people in the truck.

As the Pendolino high-speed "tilting" train, operated by German rail company Deutsche Bahn, sped through the crossing, it collided with the truck and dragged it at least 200 meters (650 feet), they said.

The truck had apparently stopped on the tracks but police could not immediately say whether it had stalled.

The train caught fire upon impact. Firefighters needed nearly an hour and a half to bring the blaze under control in this wooded region of the state of Bavaria.

The incident occurred at a partially gated rail crossing fitted with a blinking light, Deutsche Bahn said. Police had originally said there was no gate at the crossing.

A train passenger who was able to escape the wreck alerted emergency crews with his mobile phone at about 8.30 am (0630 GMT).

More than 60 emergency service workers rushed to the scene.

Deutsche Bahn closed off the stretch of track surrounding the site of the accident and transported passengers with shuttle buses -- VILSECK, , June 22 (AFP)
