Three young members of a family were killed in the city of Sousangerd in southern Iran after an explosive device left over from the 1980-1988 war with Iraq went off, reported the official Iranian news agency, IRNA, citing a press report on Thursday.
The Persian daily, Iran, said that Ali Saeedi, 13, his seven-year-old brother, Javad, and their five-year-old sister Zahra were killed instantly when an object they were playing with, apparently a landmine, exploded.
Explosions of landmines planted during the destructive eight-year war are regular happenings in Iran, and have already claimed the lives of several people and maimed many others.
The landmines were planted in Iranian farms and around residential areas after Iraqi troops captured southern territories of Iran at the start of their invasion, according to IRNA – Albawaba.com
