Three people were killed on Sunday night in Saudi Arabia during clashes between Al Qaeda fighters and Saudi security forces in the eastern Saudi city of Damman.

According to Saudi officials, one police officer and two fighters were killed in the incident which sent scared residents of the city scrambling for cover after gunmen firing from a rooftop killed the officer, according to Al Jazeera.net.

Saudi police reported gunfire exchange between gunmen and security officers, while the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya television station reported that rocket propelled grenades and hand-held grenades had targeted the Saudi policemen.

The official Saudi state television station ran footage of the body of a man wearing a blood-stained traditional Arab garment who was supposedly one of the gunmen killed.

Many residents were evacuated from areas believed to be harboring fighters who had fled the scene.
