Iran Thursday said at the UN that Iraq "cannot and should not expect to participate" in the negotiations regarding the delimitation of the continental shelves between Iran and Kuwait because they "solely concern" the two countries, according to Kuwait news agency (KUNA).

In a letter to the Security Council president, Iran’s envoy Hedi Nejad Hosseinian reiterated his government’s position that those negotiations are in line with international law and are commensurate with the exercise of their sovereign rights.

"Such negotiations ... are not required, by international law and custom, to include a third party...the third party should be included in the negotiations when the delimitation of a triangle boundary is under consideration," he was quoted as saying.
