Syrian President Bashar Assad on Wednesday discussed bilateral cooperation with Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Issam Fares and former Prime Minister Omar Karami, a presidential spokesman said.

Assad met separately with both officials at a presidential guest house in Aleppo, where they discussed developments in Lebanon and the region, the spokesman said, cited by the Daily Star newspaper.

Assad's talks with the two Lebanese leaders are the first since he postponed a meeting last month with Lebanon’s Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, said the paper.

Syria was reportedly displeased by criticism by Hariri's Al Mustaqbal newspaper of the timing of a Hizbollah attack in the Shabaa Farms last month in which one Israeli soldier was killed.

Following Hizbollah’s attack, Israel raided a Syrian military base in Lebanon, killing a Syrian soldier and injuring three others – Albawaba.com
