Syrian border police shot and killed two suspected Lebanese smugglers trying to cross into Syria Sunday, Lebanese security officials said.
The officials said Ghassan Zeineddine and his uncle, Mounir Zeineddine, were carrying household appliances on mules on the border between Syria and Lebanon when they were spotted by Syrian border police.
It was unclear whether the suspected smugglers were armed. The Lebanese officials said shots came only from the Syrian troops who killed both men, AP reported.
In Damascus, Syrian officials had no comment and U.N. officials, who have staff in the area monitoring the Syria-Israeli border, said they had no report of the firing. Smuggling cigarettes, whisky and household and electrical appliances from Lebanon to Syria is not uncommon but shootings are rare. (Albawaba.com)
