Syrian Foreign Minister, Walid al-Muallim and his Iraqi counterpart Hoshiyar Zebari on Tuesday morning signed a declaration on the resumption of the diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to SANA, the declaration said that Syria and Iraq decided to resume the diplomatic relations between the two "sisterly" countries on the level of ambassadors as of the date of signing this document.
The declaration added that both countries agreed on the resumption of diplomatic relations out of "common desire to strengthen the fraternal ties between the brotherly people in the two countries on the basis of equality, mutual respect of national sovereignty and independence and in line with the Vienna Agreement on the diplomatic relations."
Naming the ambassadors between the two countries would take place as soon as possible. Syria and Iraq stressed in the text of the declaration common desire that the resumption of the diplomatic relations would mark the beginning of a phase of constructive cooperation between the two neighboring countries in all the fields for the interest of people in both countries and to enhance common Arab work.
The declaration said that in confirmation to what has been agreed upon the Foreign Ministers of both countries signed this document in Arabic in their capacities as authorized by their respective governments.
