Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad said on Saturday that any US initiative for a peaceful settlement for the Middle East crisis should be based on United Nations resolutions and the Arab peace plan that was adopted by the Beirut Arab summit held last March.

This emerged in the course of a reception of former United States senator, James Abu Rizk who also heads the Arab-American anti discrimination committee.

Syrian television, cited by KUNA, reported that the talks discussed regional and international issues, primarily the situation in the occupied Arab territories.

It added that al-Assad emphasized that détente could only be reached if the killing and destruction stop, saying that killings lead to more killings.

The Syrian leader stressed that analysis should be conducted to specify causes of failure of efforts, aimed at establishing peace in the Middle East region, and added that any peace accord should meet the expectation of the people of the region. (Albawaba.com)
