Syria: 10th Regional congress of ruling party opens with call to improve economy

The 10th Regional Congress of al-Baath Arab Socialist Party (BASP) opened at Umayyad’s Palace for Conferences in Damascus on Monday morning under the motto “Renewable Vision…Thought to Contains All” .

 

Regional Secretary General of the BASP, President Bashar al-Assad, members of the BASP’s regional and national leaderships, members of the central leadership of the National Progressive Front, Premier and Speaker of the People’s Assembly attended the opening.

 

In his speech, al-Assad said the situation in the region has put political forces and popular organizations in front of their biggest responsibilities that are embodied in the need to face these events in a "mindful and courageous way" from one side and to work as to learn lessons and draw conclusions from the other side.

 

The Syrian leader stressed the need to make additional efforts in the economic sphere. "Improving economic performance and improving the living conditions of our citizens is a priority for us all; which means that we should accord it the attention it deserves in our discussions.  Corruption also continues to pose an economic, social and moral problem; and we need more effective and decisive mechanisms to combat it."

 

A total of 1231 original members and observers representing the branches of BASP of all Syrian governorates and units of armed forces and army, in addition to members of the central committee of BASP and heads of the popular organizations and vocational unions also were present at the opening of the congress.
