A group of south Sudanese rebels on Friday attacked a small police station in the east of the country at Abu Talha, south of Kassala, a press report said Saturday.
The independent Al-Sahafi Al-Dawli newspaper said the police, assisted by an army unit stationed near Abu Talha, managed to repel the armed attack by the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) on the police station.
No one was killed in the attack, the paper said.
A police spokesman in Khartoum said he had no information on the incident.
The SPLA, which has been fighting successive Khartoum governments since 1983, is part of the opposition umbrella National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which claimed to have briefly captured Kassala in November last year.
