Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismael said on Saturday that his country has reached an agreement with the US over an exchange of visits by high-ranking official from both countries, reported Kuwait’s official news agency (KUNA).
The visits aim at the normalization of relations between Sudan and the US, he was quoted as saying.
Ismael said the agreement was reached during talks held between both sides in Doha in the past few days.
The talks were organized by Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamed bin Jassem, said Ismael.
The Sudanese minister added that the Qatari initiative was presented to him during the Arab summit that was held in Amman last March.
“Sheikh Hamed informed me that US congressmen wish to meet with Sudanese officials in Doha to exchange views over Sudanese-American relations,” he said.
The United States broke off relations with Sudan in February 1996, accusing the state of sponsoring Islamic terrorism. The Security Council imposed sanctions two months later in response to Sudan's refusal to turn over suspects implicated in a failed 1995 assassination attempt on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Ethiopia.
The sanctions restricted the movement of Sudanese officials abroad, cut the numbers of diplomatic missions in Sudan and banned regional and international conferences in Sudan – Albawaba.com
