Jordanians regard condoms as a favorable and modern form of birth control, a recent study by the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) said.

Findings of the study were revealed during a meeting attended by Jordan’s health ministry officials and various health care organizations last week, said the Jordan Times newspaper.

Many participants were surprised by the findings, “because positive perceptions of condoms were unexpected,” a Jordanian health official said.

"This is strong encouragement that the condom provides another modern method to use," he said.

Safdudin Abarro, UNFPA representative in Jordan, said that the "use of condoms as a form of family planning is not as negative as people tend to think."

The study located 57 couples in the east Amman area who practiced the withdrawal method. Condoms were offered to the wife and 51 accepted, said the paper.

In the immediate weeks following, seven women were already found to be pregnant and did not complete the study.

"There's a 23 percent failure rate in the use of the withdrawal method," said the official.

"Condoms appear to be accepted by most withdrawal users when promoted and delivered to the door," concludes the report.

While the survey only represents a small group, the official said the study shows "there is a good chance that users of traditional methods with counseling and support can shift to modern contraceptives." – Albawaba.com
