Air pollution resulting from increased use of industrial diesel in cars has led to a higher incidence of various respiratory health problems among Lebanese, according to a report cited by the Daily Star newspaper.
“This pollution is a direct result of the emission of organic particles and black smoke from the combustion of industrial diesel in cars. And it has led to a discernible increase of asthma cases and respiratory tract infections in north Lebanon,” said the report, released by Tripoli’s Order of Physicians.
The paper said that the report was released after a cabinet decision banning the use of industrial diesel in cars by the end of June.
The decision was met with protest by taxi drivers, who complained that they could not afford to switch to the more expensive gasoline.
The report recommended that industrial diesel imports be banned and that cabinet’s decision banning taxi-service cars from using diesel engines be strictly implemented, said the report – Albawaba.com
