The United States has obtained information that a member of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network may be planning to kidnap US nationals in Jordan, the State Department said.
"The US government has received uncorroborated information indicating that as of this summer one member of the al-Qaeda organization was considering a plan to kidnap US citizens in Jordan," spokesman Richard Boucher said.
"There is no further information available to determine the credibility of this threat or any indications of timing," he told reporters, according to AFP.
On Thursday, the US embassy in Amman issued a notice to Americans living in Jordan that said it was cooperating with Jordanian authorities to evaluate the threat and possibly prevent it being acted on.
"The embassy is working closely with the Jordanian government, police and security officials on the basis of this information and they are taking appropriate measures," the notice said. Boucher added the embassy had issued the notice because it was deemed "necessary and appropriate" to warn US citizens in Jordan about it. (Albawaba.com)
