ALBAWABA - Following the severe torrential rains that havoced Sri Lanka, at least 15 people were reportedly killed with tens of others missing, as the rain caused floods and mudslides across the country.
Heavy rains have caused devastation in several regions of the country since Sunday, flooding houses, farms, and roadways and causing officials to turn off power as a precaution.
According to the disaster management center, at least 15 persons were carried away and drowned on Sunday in Colombo and the rural Rathnapura area. Three people died when mounds of soil collapsed on their homes, and one died when a tree fell on him. Six people have been missing since Sunday.
Over 5,000 people had been transported to evacuation shelters by Monday, and more than 400 homes had been destroyed, according to the center's statement.
Navy and Army personnel have been dispatched to rescue casualties and supply food and other necessities to those impacted.
Sri Lanka has been dealing with extreme weather conditions since mid-May, driven by heavy monsoon rains. Earlier, powerful winds brought down trees in various regions, killing nine people.
