Indonesia President Abdurrahman Wahid will not resign and has urged MPs to drop their calls that he face impeachment hearings, a palace spokesman said on Wednesday.

A majority of parliamentarians earlier called for a special session of the top legislature to consider impeachment hearings.

"There is no plan at all for the president to resign," Yahya Staquf told reporters.

Asked about earlier threats by Wahid to declare a state of emergency, he said: "The president will wait until the process in parliament is concluded."

Legislators are expected to continue meeting until late into the night.

Police fired warning shots as hundreds of Wahid supporters broke into the grounds of parliament later in the day. Thousands of protesters were gathered outside and police had two water canon at the ready -- JAKARTA (Reuters)
