New magnetic health insurance cards, which will be introduced by the Jordanian Health Ministry, are expected to facilitate medical services.
“All citizens with health insurance will get a new card that includes the person's national number, a personal photo and a computer chip carrying information of the patient's health record,” Ratib Hinnawi, the health minister's consultant on health insurance matters told the Jordan Times.
“The new cards, officially called smart cards, have been introduced to facilitate hospital admission, prevent duplication in treatment and stem waste in [dispensing] medication,” he added.
According to Hinnawi, the new system will also assist physicians with following up on their patients' health records.
The ministry currently insures about 22 percent of the kingdom's population and another 25 percent are covered by the Royal Medical Services of the Jordan Armed Forces – Albawaba.com
