Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was grilled Monday for seven hours at his official residence in Jerusalem by five senior police officers from the National Fraud Squad who questioned him about alleged violations of the campaign financing laws during the Likud leadership primaries and Sharon's subsequent race for prime minister.
According to Haaretz, the interrogation focused on Sharon's denial of any involvement in fund-raising for his campaigns, and documented evidence that, police sources said, Sharon must have known about, including signed checks.
Sharon cooperated with the police, but reiterated what he told State Comptroller Eliezer Goldberg last year - that he was not involved in the fund-raising, and knew nothing about the use of the fictitious companies to funnel illegal foreign money into his campaign.
He reiterated his claim that the entire matter was handled by his son, Omri Sharon - who remained silent during police questioning on the matter, saying he did not want to incriminate anyone. (Albawaba.com)
