Sharon’s lunatic policies provide more and more evidence that the hawkish leader is the worst choice the Israelis have made throughout the history of their state.
The decision by the bloodthirsty general to convene his security cabinet in the Ofra Jewish settlement in the West Bank leaves no doubt that he and his “national unity” government are going bankrupt. In other words, they have used up all available means to force the Palestinians to succumb to their conditions for “peace,” but the outcome has been complete failure.
An occupation government meeting on occupied land might mean to some that Israel does not give a damn about international, and particularly US concerns, but there are actually more facets to the situation.
Sharon defied the Arab states when he responded to their summit meeting in March by ruthlessly bombing Gaza and West Bank cities. It did not work, so he occupied Gaza. His generals were talking about a long, unwelcome stay in the Palestinian ‘A’ area when the US became so incredibly embarrassed that its secretary of state reluctantly uttered some words of protest.
Tens of Palestinians have been assassinated by Sharon’s military machines, other activists have been kidnapped and dozens have been injured. Meanwhile, a few others have been arrested by the PNA as it tries to play its part in lame security deals, but in vain.
While Israeli mothers are unable to give birth to someone who can, by force or through negotiations, guarantee Israelis a peaceful life, Palestinian mothers are feeding the streets with hundreds like Yahya Ayyash, Ibrahim bani Oudeh, Thabet Thabet and the rest of the martyrs, whose deaths will never deplete the Palestinian spirit of resistance.
What’s left for Sharon? He can’t reoccupy the bits of Palestinian land that Israel has already relinquished; the suffocating siege of the Palestinians, despite the disappointing Arab “helping hand,” has not eroded the victim’s will to break free of the chains of the victimizer.
Pressures on Arafat have failed to stop “the Palestinian violence,” simply because it is not his call. Arafat can’t force the families, colleagues, friends and neighbors of those who have been killed, injured or made homeless by Israelis to “throw roses” onto the occupation troops’ tanks and wave their hands cordially to their gunships.
Israel has worn out all of its options, except perhaps for one last thing, for which the general has already achieved notoriety.
Holding this security cabinet meeting on occupied Palestinian land, with his usual supernatural arrogance, will provoke more Palestinians to react violently, giving him the opportunity to spill more of their children’s blood: Sharon’s favorite pastime.
