Jordan's domestic violence victims will no longer be exposed to the “unhealthy” atmosphere of criminal courts, and their cases are expected to come before a separate panel of judges, according to the Jordan Times.

Judge Taghreed Hikmat, the head of the administrative team of the Family Protection Project (FPP) was quoted by the Amman-based paper as saying that “the head of the Judicial Council, Judge Ahmad Tarawneh, agreed in principle to separate domestic violence cases from regular criminal cases heard at the Criminal Court.”

Hikmat said the separation procedure would consist of designating a tribunal to hear such cases at specified times.

“Our primary concern is to ensure confidentiality and privacy for such delicate and sensitive cases,” Hikmat, one of 13 female judges in Jordan, told the daily.

The FPP was launched in Jordan in March 2000 to tackle social problems in an innovative manner in partnership with governmental and non-governmental organizations in Jordan – Albawaba.com
