German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Wednesday that the United States had a duty to consult with its European allies on its intended anti-terrorist measures and declared that Germany was not prepared to run the risk of military "adventures."
Addressing a special session of the lower house of the German parliament on how to respond to the shocking anti-US attacks of September 11, he said that Germany and its European partners had a right as well as duties under the Atlantic alliance.
"And this means: information and consultation," Schroeder said.
"What do we as Germans and Europeans want to achieve: unrestricted solidarity with the USA regarding all necessary measures," he said.
He continued: "Germany is ready for risks, including military ones, but not for adventures. That is not being demanded of us, thanks to the sensible attitude of the Americans, and will certainly also not be demanded” -- BERLIN (AFP)
