Saudi Arabia beheaded by the sword two nationals for murder Monday in the first executions of 2001, the interior ministry said.

Saad bin Ajlane bin Huzam al-Dossari and Mubarak bin Abdullah bin Mohammad al-Dawas were both convicted of shooting two other Saudi nationals in separate cases, the ministry said in a statement.

There were at least 113 executions announced in the kingdom in 2000.

Saudi Arabia, home of Islam's holiest places, applies a strict code of Islamic sharia law, imposing the death penalty on people found guilty of murder, rape, apostasy, armed robbery, drug trafficking and repeated drug offences -- RIYADH (AFP)
