The trial of 12 suspects charged with bombing the US destroyer Cole opened but was immediately adjourned for one month to allow further investigations, according to a legal source.
Amid tight security, the 12 suspects were brought to the closed session at the Sanaa courthouse where the prosecution requested another month to pursue inquiries.
Judge Ahmad Mohammad al-Jarmuzi agreed to the adjournment and extended the custody order on the the suspects, the source said, according to AFP?.
They are accused of involvement in the October 2000 bombing of the Cole in Aden port which left 17 US sailors dead.
Yemeni officials have said the trial has been repeatedly delayed by US insistence it be preceded by the arrest of all suspects in the case.
The brief opening Sunday followed the start on May 29 of the trial of 15 Yemenis charged with "terrorist acts", including the October 2002 attack on the French supertanker Limburg, off southern Yemen. (Albawaba.com)
