Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov held talks in Damascus on Wednesday with Syrian Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara at the beginning of a regional tour focused on US threats to attack Iraq.
"We call for renewed efforts to reach a political settlement because the Iraq question can not be resolved militarily," Saltanov told reporters following the meeting, according to AFP.
He said the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and ties between Damascus and Moscow were also dealt with in his talks with al-Shara, whose country like Russia is opposed to a US attack on Baghdad.
Saltanov was to travel on to Jordan later Wednesday and is also scheduled to visit Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. (Albawaba.com)
