Iranian president-elect, Hassan Rouhani, thanked his countrymen for 'choosing moderation,' in a speech to the nation on Monday afternoon.
During his first press conference since the election, Rouhani said he will seek 'constructive interaction with the world.' He also paid tribute to "passionate young Iranians" and said he would not forget his election promises, the BBC reported.
Rouhani also vowed to fix the country's struggling economy and recalibrate diplomatic relations with the international community. The former nuclear negotiator earned a reputation as a moderate for his conciliatory approach to global discussions.
In a wide ranging press conference, the president-elect also said that Iran would show more transparency over its nuclear programme, although he said that there were no plans for the country to stop enriching uranium.
Iran's Interior Minister, Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar, said 72 percent of the 50 million eligible Iranians had turned out to vote in last Friday's election. Rouhani secured just over the 50 percent of the vote needed to avoid a run-off. His closest rival, conservative Tehran mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, picked up 6 million votes.
