The Syrian army has recently made several changes in its deployment of troops along its border with Israel, Haaretz reported Friday.
After analysis of these troops movements, however, the Israeli intelligence believes the changes are designed to boost defenses in the area and eliminate weaknesses in Syrian troop positions, the report added.
Meanwhile, Syria's President Bashar Assad said on Friday that an American war on Iraq would create "fertile soil" for terrorism throughout the Middle East.
Syria supports the U.S.-led war on terrorism not because it seeks good ties with Washington, but because it, too, regards the al-Qaeda network as an enemy, Assad is quoted as telling The Times in an interview.
In this interview, Assad is quoted as saying all the U.S. proposals for a peace settlement during the administration of President George W. Bush have been "extremely biased in favor of Israel." He added Islamic Jihad and Hamas "express the view of millions of Palestinians inside the occupied territories," according to the interview.
Those Palestinians are supported by "300 million Arabs, by over a billion Muslims, and by millions of people all over the world," Assad is quoted as saying. (Albawaba.com)
