Former Tehran police chief Farhad Nazari escaped an assassination attempt in western Tehran Saturday, reported the official Iranian news agency (IRNA), citing a press report.
The daily Jam-e Jam cited eyewitnesses as saying that the assassins had only fired one shot and then fled the scene.
It said that the officials have declined to comment on the issue.
Jam-e Jam quoted a security official as saying that Nazari,
accompanied by his bodyguards, must have been monitored by the assassins, said IRNA.
Nazari was sacked after defying an order from the interior ministry in July 1999 to not enter a Tehran University dormitory after a peaceful student protest over the closure of the first reformist daily Salaam.
The dorm attack provoked days of bloody riots in Tehran and other major cities, believed to be the worst of the kind since the 1979-Islamic revolution.
