Qatar has sent urgent relief assistance to Sudan, to help alleviate the devastating effects of flooding in several areas along the Nile River, reported the Gulf Times on Monday.

The assistance was ordered by emir, Sheikh Hamad Al Thani, it added.

Nile floods in Sudan have destroyed hundreds of homes and left thousands of families homeless this flood season, according to official preliminary estimates released Sunday, cited by AFP.

The worst affected area was River Nile State in northern Sudan where 1,102 families were left without shelter when floods razed 577 homes in 55 villages and partially damaged 811 others, the civil defense report said.

The official estimates only covered damage up to August 21. Since then, flooding has reportedly drowned islands and destroyed more land and homes, leaving thousands more homeless.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned Wednesday that the flooding had displaced tens of thousands of people and destroyed crops, aggravating already precarious food supplies.

The second most affected area has been Sennar state on the Blue Nile in east central Sudan, where floodwaters have completely destroyed 116 houses and partially damaged 203 others in 25 villages, the Sudanese report said.

The floods have since subsided in central Sudan, but have been getting worse in northern Sudan, where more tributaries join the Nile as it rushes towards Egypt and the Mediterranean.
