Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the American policy towards Iraq on Friday, telling an international economic conference that Iraqis trusted Russia more than the US. "The country's people, of course, have far greater trust in their traditional partners than in, shall I say, those who now control the situation," he told the World Economic Forum meeting.

Replying to a question, Putin said, according to Reuters, he was hopeful a U.N. resolution on Iraq would be agreed this month but insisted Russian contracts signed with Saddam Hussein's regime had to be honoured. "So far we are dissatisfied with the resolution proposed by our U.S. partners. But we do see a desire for compromise. I believe that if we are guided by these principles we can count on such a compromise being found," he said.
