Proxim Wireless Corporation, a global provider of broadband wireless equipment and wholly-owned subsidiary of Terabeam, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRBM), has provided the broadband wireless equipment to power a public Wi-Fi network at Dubai Internet City (DIC).

To augment its business infrastructure and provide broadband wireless Internet access for its member enterprises, DIC has a public Wi-Fi network powered by Proxim’s AP-4000 and Tsunami MP.11 products. The AP-4000 access points were selected because of its support for roaming and for voice over IP (VoIP), its dual-radio architecture, and high output power. Equally important in the selection process was the breadth of Proxim’s product portfolio that enabled select complementary access and backhaul products from a single vendor.

“We chose Proxim because of their established track record of providing turnkey wireless network solutions and outstanding technical support throughout this region,” said Malek Sultan Al Malek, director of partner relations at DIC. “Dubai Internet City is committed to delivering five-star services to our member companies, and has teamed up with proven partners to achieve this result.”

Demand for WiMax enabled products is expected to increase in the region as regulations regarding its implementation get finalised. Wireless networks are a key component to the continued advancement of the Middle East and Online Distribution is committed to promoting this technology in the region through channel partners.

“We believe that Wimax is the right solution for users in this region, and we are working towards promoting this standard-based technology to increase connectivity. Proxim’s products are a perfect fit with our existing portfolio – we now have the largest portfolio of network solutions and services in the Middle East,” said Sushma Kajaria, Business Unit Manager - Security, Online Distribution Middle East, Western Asia and North Africa.

“Proxim is proud to deliver for an advanced business community like Dubai Internet City,” said Faisal Saifullah, Sales Director – Middle East,  Proxim Wireless Corporation. “Our reputation for technology leadership, global reach and world-class support will continue to enhance communications for enterprises throughout the Middle East.”

Proxim also recently won the coveted Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Innovation in the field of Scalable Wireless Broadband Systems. The annual award is presented to a company that has demonstrated excellence in new products and technologies within its industry.

The two product lines singled out by Frost & Sullivan include the Wimax Forum Certified Tsunami MP.16, the only system that enables optimal data rate connectivity and interoperability with Intel-based subscriber units. Proxim’s other significant innovation, the enhanced version of its Tsunami MP.11, delivers the capabilities of fixed and mobile Wimax for license-free frequency bands worldwide with features such as roaming with seamless hand-offs at speeds up to 200 km/hr, WiMAX Quality of Service (QoS), and enhanced dynamic frequency selection (DFS).

“Proxim Wireless won this award for its exceptional ability to provide scalable WiMAX solutions that can be deployed individually or in multi-sector configurations, allowing a wider range of service providers to use Wimax technology – from rural providers requiring less dense configurations to metropolitan providers who need to support more nodes at closer range,” said Sivakumar Muthuramalingam, research analyst at Frost & Sullivan.
