At least 40 people were killed when a bus ran into a stationary truck on a road outside Benin city, capital of Edo State in southwest Nigeria, a press report said Saturday.
The accident occurred on Friday on the highway between Benin and Asaba in nneighbouring Delta state, the newspaper The Punch reported. Several people were seriously injured and were taken to hospitals in Benin for treatment.
The paper quoted a witness as saying the driver of the bus was speeding and suddenly lost control of the vehicle before ramming into the truck.
Road accidents occur regularly in Nigeria due to poor roads, dangerous driving, disregard for traffic regulations and poor maintenance of vehicles.
