Support for an independent Palestinian state is growing among Americans, despite their general belief that Palestinians are more to blame for the recent violence in the Middle East, indicated a poll released Monday.
The ABC News-Washington Post poll showed two-thirds support the recognition of Palestine as an independent state, compared with just over half who felt that way in October 2001.
The ABC-Post poll and a poll by CBS News released over the weekend said about half the public felt the recent trip to the Middle East by Secretary of State Colin Powell failed to improve prospects for peace. About a third or more thought the trip had helped the prospects of peace.
According to another poll released Monday, 64% of 905 registered New York voters oppose sending US troops to serve as peacekeepers in the Middle East, while 29% support sending troops. Among 323 Jewish voters surveyed, 52% oppose sending over troops, compared to 38% in favor. (Albawaba.com)
