Jordanian army units deployed on the borders with Israel have foiled several attempts to infiltrate the Jewish state, Prime Minister Ali Abu Ragheb told AFP on Thursday.
"The army is effectively deployed all along the border for many reasons," Abu Ragheb said.
"The armed forces managed to foil several infiltration attempts" from Jordan into Israel, he said, stressing, however, that these incidents did not pose a threat to the Hashemite kingdom.
"We have full control over the situation on our borders and we manage it well," he said.
According to security sources, dozens of infiltration bids have been foiled since the start of the Palestinian intifada, or uprising, against Israeli rule in September 2000.
In mid-July, officials also reported the arrest of a Lebanese man who tried to smuggle mortar shells into the Palestinian territories through Jordan, and later said three people armed with weapons and explosives were also arrested.
A Jordanian lorry driver was also arrested by Israeli security authorities, who caught him transporting a full load of weapons to the Occupied Territories.
The driver told interrogators that some people had contacted hin in Amman and paid him JD2,000 (about $3,000) for each of the three shipments he had deivered to Palestinian parties.
Infilitrators from other countries are also trying to attack Israeli targets.
In June, the Jerusalem Post newspaper said that Israeli security forces had apprehended a Syrian citizen who crossed the border into Israel. The man, whose identity was not revealed, passed into Israeli territory from the occupied Golan Heights, said the report - Albawaba.com
