An oil pipeline was shattered Monday night in Bahrain when a water tanker crashed in Al Sakhir, near Awali in the Gulf state, reported the Gulf Daily News.
An interior ministry source on the scene said the driver was travelling west on the Zallaq Highway around 8 p.m. (Bahrain local time) when he lost control of the vehicle and careered off the road and into the dessert.
“The truck smashed into oil pipelines which criss-cross the ground,” said the source.
The vehicle then flipped over, further damaging the pipelines, but the driver escaped unhurt, said the source.
Two portable cranes were dispatched to the scene to lift the overturned vehicle.
Six fire engines as well as Public Security and BDF personnel, stood by for more than an hour until officials from Bahrain’s petroleum company (Bapco) were able to shut off the oil flow.
The source confirmed there was an oil leakage, but he could not estimate the extent of the spill.
