Thousands of Palestinians marched on Saturday in several Palestinian towns and refugee camps in commemoration of the "Nakba" anniversary which falls on May 15 every year. "Nakba" means disaster and refers to the tragic events, which led to the establishment the state of Israel in 1948.
In Tulkarm, thousands of refugees marched in the town's main street to assert their commitment to the right of return. Some refugees carried the keys to their former homes. Others carried signs and placards illustrating the "sacredness of the right of return."
According to IRNA, similar marches and other activities are expected to take place in the next few days, Palestinian sources said.
In 1948, when Israel was created, Jewish forces expelled more than 90 percent of Palestinians to flee their towns and villages. According to latest estimates, the number of Palestinian refugees stands now at 4-4.5 million.
