A Palestinian teenager was killed on Sunday after he stepped on abandoned explosives while he was on his way to pick figs in the southern West Bank, Palestinian police said.

Munir Mohammad Talahmeh, 13, died at around 8:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) in Al Burj village some 30 kilometers southwest of Hebron, police said.

Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem said Talahmeh was killed when munitions apparently abandoned by the Israel army - which used to train in the area - blew up.

"The child apparently stepped on the abandoned ammunition," B'Tselem spokesman Tomer Feffer told AFP.

A total of 34 people have been killed in such incidents since 1987, among them 27 children, and more than 90 injured, B'Tselem said.

B'Tselem protests that the army does not thoroughly investigate such cases, fails to prosecute those responsible and has no appropriate procedure to compensate victims and their families - HEBRON (AFP)
