A two-day international conference for solidarity with the Palestinians began Saturday in Larnaca, according to the Cyprus News Agency.
The conference, which is organized by the World and the Cyprus Peace Councils, was opened by House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, who conveyed the "root of evil" in the Middle East was "the fact that the state of Israel, under (Prime Minister) Ariel Sharon and the extreme conservative powers backing him, has withdrawn from the Oslo agreements and the whole peace process and is refusing the Palestinian people the right to create their own independent state."
