Palestinian gunmen on Wednesday fired shots at a Jewish prayer service in Hebron, wounding two female Israeli worshippers, reports said.
The two injured women were set to participate in the Jewish Sukkot holiday, the Tel Aviv-based daily Haaretz said late Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli troops penetrated one kilometer into the Gaza Strip, killing six Palestinians.
According to AFP, the shots came from the Palestinian district of Abu Sneina on a hill overlooking the center of the town where 400 Jewish settlers live, surrounded by heavy army protection.
The army returned fire, Israeli army radio said.
The shooting came as thousands of Israelis flocked to the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the center of Hebron for the holiday of Sukkot, the Feast of the Tabernacles. The site is holy to both Jews and Muslims.
In 1994 in Hebron, fundamentalist Jewish settler Baruch Goldstein opened fire on a crowd of Muslims praying at the Abraham Mosque, killing 29 worshippers.
The latest AFP estimates put the number of Israelis killed in the Intifada at over 170. Since the September 2000 outbreak of the latest Palestinian uprising against 34 years of Israeli military occupation, Israeli soldiers have killed over 630 Palestinians - Albawaba.com
