The speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Salim Al Zaanoun, told Albawaba.com on Sunday that he would announce today the “death” of the Oslo Agreement signed with Israel in 1993.
Al Zaanoun told Albawaba.com that he would hold a press conference shortly thereafter in Amman, during which he would officially announce the termination of the agreement.
The speaker told Albawaba.com that the decision came as a result of the expiration of the transitional period set by the agreement, but more importantly because of Israel’s ongoing aggression against the Palestinian people, and its failure to implement the agreement’s stipulations.
The PLO, during the tenure of then prime minister Rabin, signed the Oslo agreement’s declaration of principles in September 1993.
The agreement was limited to five years, which was set as a transitional period before reaching a comprehensive peace treaty with Israel. The transitional period ended in 1998.
Israel has not abided by the agreement’s stipulations, particularly with regard to the redeployment of its forces from the Occupied Territories according to a particular schedule.
