A Palestinian detainee, Mohammad Salman Abu Jamus, who is suspected of attempted assassination of Israeli officer, escaped Sunday morning from a moving Prison's Authority vehicle in the vicinity of the town of Yokne'am, in the north of Israel.

Officials of the Israeli Shin Bet security service said that the vehicle in which the suspect was riding was completely secure and it is not clear how Abu Jamus, who was handcuffed, managed to escape, Haaretz reported.

Israel Radio reported Sunday that Abu Jamus had been chained to another prisoner and had somehow managed to escape through the window of the van. Twenty minutes passed before the four guards in the vehicle noticed that Abu Jamus had escaped.

A large police and Border Police contingent, as well as a police helicopter, were involved in a manhunt for Abu Jamus.

During October 2001, Abu Jamus placed a bomb in the home of a navy Colonel, The Jerusalem Post added. (Albawaba.com)
