A new car appears every nine minutes on Cairo's traffic-choked roads, according to traffic department statistics published Friday.
Last year, 59,000 new cars were registered in the Egyptian capital, home to 59 percent of the cars in the country, according to the department's report published in Al-Arabi newspaper.
As of December 1999, Egypt had three million vehicles, including 1.2 million cars. In that month alone, 10,000 vehicles were registered, including 5,700 cars.
