A Yemeni anti-pollution team has contained a three-ton oil spill from the refinery in the southern port city of Aden, the official SABA news agency reported Saturday.

The spill was due to a "technical error" and the breach in the refinery's installations was quickly sealed up, preventing serious damage to the environment, Mohammad Mubarak, head of maritime affairs in Aden, told SABA.

An investigation has been opened on the causes of the spill, the agency added.

Built in 1954 by British Petroleum close to Aden port, the refinery, which was nationalized in 1977, has a production capacity of 150,000 barrels a day. (Albawaba.com)
