Iran does not import blood or its byproducts from abroad, said Iran’s official news agency (IRNA).

The managing director of the Blood Transfusion Organization, Ali Akbar Pour Fathollah, was quoted by the agency as saying that “Iran produces all the blood and blood byproducts it needs in the country, and does not need to import blood from other countries.”

As for the spread of contagious diseases through the blood transfusions, he said such cases were very rare now that world standards were strictly enforced.

Official statistics show that about 2,300 people in Iran have AIDS – Albawaba.com
