Officer Nominated to Become Turkey’s First Female General

For the first time in the history of the Turkish military, a female officer has been nominated to become a general, according to press reports here. 

Nur Inank, the commander of a military medical school, is expected to get the promotion at a meeting by the higher military council to be headed by Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit in August.  

The meeting will discuss the promotion of more than 120 officers serving in the top ranks of the military. 

The council’s decisions have to be approved by President Ahmet Sezer before taking effect.
