A train carrying nuclear waste to Germany has been halted temporarily in northeastern France at the request of the authorities in Berlin, an anti-nuclear group said Monday.

"The Germans don't want the convoy to reach the border too early. According to our sources, there'll be at least an hour's delay," said Pascal Braud of Reseau Sortir du Nucleaire.

He said the train, carrying 67 tonnes of material reprocessed at the La Hague plant in Normandy, had been due to cross the border at midday (1100 GMT).

Major protests are being planned on the German side of the border against the shipment, whose destination is a storage facility near the northern town of Gorleben.
