On Sunday, North Korea confirmed it had started removing United Nations surveillance equipment at frozen energy-producing nuclear facilities, which would resume producing electricity.

Pyongyang has started "the work of removing the seals and monitoring cameras from the frozen nuclear facilities for their normal operation to produce electricity," said the North Korean Central News Agency

The agency said N. Korea’s decision announced this month to reactivate its nuclear facilities frozen under a 1994 accord with Washington "was taken because the US unilaterally abandoned its commitment to supply heavy oil in compensation for the loss of electricity."

North Korea had informed the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of its decision to lift its nuclear freeze to cope with the halt in US oil supplies, KCNA added.

However, the IAEA had failed to show "any positive attitude, whiling away time", the news agency said. This led to the decision to remove the monitoring equipment. (Albawaba.com)
