The council meeting of a civil liberties group in Tunisia was surrounded by police over the weekend, some of whom violently attacked certain activists of the NGO, according to local Tunisian press sources.

Sihem Bensedrine, a journalist and Tunisian human rights campaigner contrasted the situation with the fact that it occurred at the same time as the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Human rights groups often complain about the power and authority given to police in the country, believing that the government can take a stronger hand in repelling demonstrators.
