A suicide bomber detonated his explosives on King David Street in the Mamila neighborhood in Jerusalem, lightly wounding six Israelis, reports said.

The bomb, packed with nails and shrapnel, went off on the busy street near David Citadel Hotel, which lies very near the line separating East from West Jerusalem, Haaretz newspaper said, citing a report by Israeli Radio.

Israel has occupied the Jerusalem for decades, since seizing it from Arab owners, and has repeatedly proclaimed the city its "eternal and undivided" capital.

The occupation of Jerusalem has repeatedly played a key role in shattering peace negotiations, as had the wider issue of Israeli "settlement" of vast swathes of Palestinian land conquered in 1967.

According to the UK-based magazine The Economist, Israel has "flouted" the 1993 Oslo peace accords by moving thousands of its citizens onto the occupied land.

Over 800 Palestinians and more than 220 Israelis have been killed in the latest Palestinian uprising against 34 years of Israeli occupation.

A recent report by Haaretz said that over 2,000 Israelis had been wounded, while between 8,500 and 10,000 Palestinians had been wounded.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who successfully campaigned on promises of securing the personal safety of ordinary Israelis within a short period by taking a hard line, is now telling them to prepare for a long war - Albawaba.com
